I am writing to express my support for Jen Metzger’s candidacy in the forthcoming September 13th Primary election for the 42nd Senate District; and to clarify certain expressed concerns about Jen Metzger’s successful fundraising efforts.
Jennifer Metzger’s campaign has successfully raised more money than the other candidates in the 42 Senate District race. But this was the result of her broad appeal and grass roots effort to raise money. As of the last august campaign finance filing, the Metzger campaign received 1,101 contributions with a median contribution of $50. Nearly 81% of these contributions were from working class folks who gave $25 or less.
Moreover, forty-three percent of Metzger’s contributions were for $10 or less. Only 4.2% of the contributions given to Jen Metzger’s campaign were over $1,000. Moreover, none of those small number of contributions over a $1,000 were from corporations or LLCs. Most of those contributions were from individual working professionals and single entrepreneurs who in their respective successful pursuits of the American Dream have generously given to those causes and candidates –like Jennifer Metzger – who they strongly believe in.
I’m neither an entrepreneur nor a successful professional. I’m a working middle class civil servant who donated $100 to Jen Metzger’s campaign because I believe and share the same democratic party values and policies she espouses. Jen Metzger, for a variety of reasons, is more electable and stands the best chance of helping Democrats regain the NYS State Senate.
Finally, the harsh reality is that political campaigns are expensive. Most candidates can’t and should not be required to self-finance their campaign. Hence, I contribute money to candidates that I believe in because my vote, my endorsement and all the talk in the world is not enough to win elections.
