I wanted to take a moment to thank the voters of the Village of Warwick for electing me to another term as Village Justice. By all accounts it was a record-breaking turnout for a Village Justice election, and the realization that such a large majority of my fellow Villagers came out in support of me is truly humbling.
In 2009, the then-Village Justice was running unopposed for a fourth term. On Election Day that year, I was approached by a group of colleagues and Village residents who, like me, felt that the Court could be run in a way that better reflected the values of our Village. They asked me if I would consider seeking the office via a write-in campaign. I was aware that it was an unconventional and controversial approach, but with their support and encouragement, I agreed.
In the eight years since that time, I have managed to turn the Village of Warwick Justice Court from what it was into one of the most respected Justice Courts in Orange County. Prosecutors, defense attorneys, police officers, probation officials and defendants alike say their experiences in my courtroom are the most pleasant ones they have in our legal system. With the assistance of my wonderful clerks, I have modernized the courtroom facility and our operating systems. Since I have been on the bench, the Justice Court has been audited twice—once by the NYS Comptroller’s Office and once by the Office of Court Administration—receiving excellent reports each time.
As this Village celebrates its sesquicentennial year, we honor the leaders of the past and the vision they possessed to create the Village we all love. I am proud to play a small role in the governance of the Village for at least a short time into the future. I will do my utmost to serve you well.
