The Town Budget for 2017 remained front and center at the Thurs., Nov. 17 meeting of the Town Board, with two public hearings pertaining to the budget before it was passed on Nov. 17. The first public hearing was on the preliminary budget, which is the general budget for all residents. The second was on the special district budget, which includes taxes that only residents benefiting from the services pay for (i.e. water districts).
While no one from the public spoke at the meeting, Warwick Town Supervisor Michael Sweeton gave an update at the meeting on the preliminary budget being proposed that night, which has rates of $6.62/1,000 of AV for Village residents and $19.85/1,000 of AV for Town residents, resulting in a slight decrease in the Town tax bill of about $4 for the average homeowner in the Villages of Greenwood Lake and Florida. Residents outside of these Villages and in the Village of Warwick will see about a $30 increase for the average home.
Sweeton explained again at this meeting, as he had when he presented the budget in October, that this is due almost entirely to an increase in payroll costs for Town and Village Police and the Town’s Department of Public Works.
“It is the Town Board’s belief that further reductions of these costs would severely hamper our ability to provide these crucial services,” said Sweeton.
