Story by Kathleen Wilson
The 2017/18 Albert Wisner Public Library (AWPL) Annual Appeal was officially celebrated on Thurs., Dec. 14 at the Albert Wisner Public Library. Even though the library receives public funds, the Library Board wanted to offer more to the community and formed the Albert Wisner Public Library Foundation. Incorporated in 2005, the 501(c)(3) Foundation’s mission is to raise private funds in support of services and programs.
“Through the generosity of the residents of our community, our Library has the busiest programming schedule in the Ramapo Catskills Library System (RCLS),” said Library Director Rosemary Cooper.
The RCLS includes libraries in Orange, Rockland, Sullivan, and Ulster counties and numbers more than 50 libraries.
Margaret Bogdanski, Trustee of the AWPL Foundation, said that every year the Library Foundation sponsors their Annual Appeal and mailers have already been sent to the entire community for the 2017/18 fundraiser.
“The charitable citizens of our community generously donate funds to help keep our taxes low,” said President of Friends of the Library Colleen Larsen.
The Friends of the Library was established in 1973 and has an active Board of more than 45 and community membership of more than 1,000. The generous donors of the community helped the Library earn its “Best In Class” award and make possible the numerous activities, concerts, drama performances, exhibits, and countless services the Library offers to the community.
In perfect harmony, the Library hosted their Annual Holiday Open House to thank the community for its generosity. Everyone visiting the library on Dec. 14 enjoyed a variety of delicious holiday cookies, candy, ciders, and a raffle with wonderful prizes including plants, baskets, pottery, books, and crafts.
And the wonder goes on with the new River Birch Reading and Performance Patio opening in May 2018! The Foundation President, Donna Applegate; Colleen Larsen, Vice President; Glenn P. Dickes, Treasurer; Rosemary Cooper, Secretary; Kathleen Georgalas, Assistant Secretary; and the Board of Governors stated the Foundation would like to provide umbrella tables and chairs, along with benches and picnic tables for the new patio. These additions will provide a beautiful and relaxing environment for the community to enjoy performances, reading, studying, or just relaxing outdoors.
The First Private Donation for the Library was from Mrs. Albert Wisner in the fall of 1923: “I direct my executor (Annie Wisner Dunlap), to cause to be incorporated the Albert Wisner Memorial Library for the establishment of a public library at Warwick, New York, as a memorial to my late husband, and I give and bequeath to the said corporation the sum of $100,000, out of which I direct the expenditure of not to exceed the sum of $50,000 for the construction and equipment of its library building. I direct the difference to be set aside and retained as a perpetual endowment fund.” Will of Mrs. Albert Wisner
