Over twenty community members participated in an engaging and interactive training to become volunteers with the newly formed Town of Warwick Friendly Visitor Program. The two-part training prepared volunteers to assist neighbors in the Town and Village of Warwick, Village of Greenwood Lake, Village of Florida and Pine Island.
The Friendly Visitor Program trains and matches volunteers with neighbors to help them continue to live independently. Just an hour or two a week can make a significant impact. Volunteer hours are flexible and can help older adults age in place and enjoy their independence.
Volunteers provide much needed rides to medical appointments which can foster better physical and mental health. Grocery shopping for a neighbor can mean the difference between eating canned soups every day and having fresh produce to make a salad. By playing a game, offering clerical support, reading or chatting with an isolated neighbor, these weekly home visits provide companionship.
