The Greenwood Lake Police Department responded to the area of Oak St. and State Rte. 210, also known as Windermere Ave., on Mon., Jun. 18 for a report of a found child. Officers were met by multiple bystanders who stated that the young boy, four years old, was covered in dirt, sweating and barefoot, running in the roadway.
Bystanders brought the child into a nearby business and gave the child something to drink and eat. The child told the bystanders, that he had climbed out of the basement window to go and find his sisters.
According to the Greenwood Lake Police Department, the child told the bystanders where he lived and said that his father, Anthony P. Serpe, was asleep. The bystanders then brought the boy to the house and unsuccessfully attempted to make contact with the father and then went back to the business.
Police Officers also attempted to make contact with the father at the residence and were initially unsuccessful and attempts to contact the father by phone were also unsuccessful. Officers then forced entry into the residence and found the father asleep on the couch in the living room of the residence. Police report that upon waking Serpe up and speaking to him, he allegedly showed signs of intoxication.
Upon further investigation by the Greenwood Lake Police Department, Serpe was arrested on charges of Endangering the Welfare of a Child and arraigned in Greenwood Lake Village Court. He was remanded to Orange County Jail in lieu of $1,500 cash bail pending a future court appearance.
