Dr. Steven Cohen, who has been serving as the interim Superintendent in the Greenwood Lake School District since July, was appointed as the permanent Superintendent for the District at the School Board meeting on Wed., Oct. 18. Dr. Cohen has served as a Superintendent; Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment; Department Chairperson; and Social Studies teacher over his 40-year career. He is a wonderful addition to the Greenwood Lake school community.
Gibel Appointed BOE Vice President
The Board of Education elected Greg Gibel as Vice President of the School Board. District Clerk Mary DePietro gave the oath of office to Gibel upon his appointment.
Results of Special Election
The Board accepted the results of the special election for the open Board seat held on Wed., Sept. 13. Thomas O’Brien has been elected to the Board. O’Brien received 118 votes, while Alyssa Saladino received 45 votes and Ronald Sommer received 89 votes.
Presentations & Statements
A group of middle school students presented the Board with ideas for after school clubs. The students made presentations for an Archery and Newspaper Club. The Board approved both of the new clubs for middle school students.
Approval of Hudson Valley Earth Works
The Board approved Hudson Valley Earth Works to perform snow removal and plowing for the District now through Tues., May 1.
External Financial Audit
The external financial audit conducted by Nugent and Haeussler, P.C. for the fiscal year of July 1, 2016 to June 30, 2017 resulted in an “unqualified” opinion. The report was accepted by the Board and details the independent auditor’s judgment that the District’s financial records and statements are fairly and appropriately presented and, in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). Dr. Cohen commended the Business office staff for a successful and clean audit.
Next Board Meeting
The next Board of Education meeting will be held on Wed., Nov. 15 at 7 p.m. in the Elementary School gym, located at 80 Waterstone Rd.
