Project Knomad and the Village of Warwick Sesquicentennial Committee will host, “Game of Skate,” on Sun., Sept. 24 from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Warwick Skate Park in Veterans Memorial Park, located at 60 Forester Ave. in Warwick.
Everyone is welcome to join in the fun and celebrate the first community skate park in the area by participating in the games or by watching them. Registration to compete will begin at 1 p.m. at a cost of $10. The games will start at 2 p.m. In addition to the competition, there will be live performances by Miranda Writes and Chemical Catastrophe, and pizza and drinks will be available for purchase.
Residents will also have an opportunity to bring their letters to the future or to a loved one that will be placed in the new time capsule, which will be opened fifty years from now in 2067. At the event there will be a photo exhibit entitled, “Past-Present-Future,” on display of the Robert J. Newhard Skate Park from its beginning, to the present, and to its future.
Project Knomad has dreams and visions of a new, concrete skate park. Updating the park to today’s standards means a park that is more fun for the skaters and their families as well as less costly maintenance. These dreams give way to the possibility that there might someday be an Olympic skateboarder from Warwick, as skateboarding is becoming an Olympic sport.
Project Knomad, a non-profit organization under the umbrella of Warwick’s community non-profit, Community 2000, was inspired by local artist and skateboarder, Ian Sharp, who passed away in 2012. Coming together to see Ian’s artworks curated, the group quickly bridged to connecting with local skateboarders who were also inspired by Ian. Project Knomad retains Ian’s vision of bringing youth and community together with art, music and skateboarding as a vehicle.
