During the Florida School District Board meeting on Tues., Nov. 21, Superintendent Jan Jehring reported that there was a technology presentation during Superintendent’s Day on Tues., Nov. 7. Jehring said that it was very well received. The key speaker was Eric Sheninger, who has written several books about technology in education.
“We had about seven or eight other Districts that sent representatives. The message was about changing instruction, preparing our students for the workplace that they are going to have when they graduate. We were introduced to many new tools and we talked a bit about active learning spaces. It was a dynamic day,” said Jehring.
NYS Technology Conference
Superintendent Jehring also reported that the District had a team of two administrators and three teachers attend the annual NYSCATE (New York State Curriculum for Advanced Technology in Education) Conference in Rochester on Sun., Nov. 19. Attendee and administrator Dana Castine said that Thomas C. Murray was a keynote speaker at the conference. He co-authored a book with Eric Sheninger called, “Learning Transformed: 8 Keys to Designing Tomorrow’s Schools.”
Veterans Day Event
Jehring said that the Veteran’s Day program held at S.S. Seward Institute on Thurs., Nov. 9 with a flag raising ceremony was well attended.
Kindergarten Thanksgiving Event
Jehring also said that at Golden Hill Elementary there was a program for Thanksgiving. It was a “Kindergarten Thanksgiving Feast and Show.”
Acceptance of NYS Comptroller’s Report
A motion passed to accept the Report of Examination prepared by the Office of the State Comptroller covering the period from Jul. 1, 2015 through Jun. 9, 2017.
Safety Plan Public Hearing
It was announced that there will be a public hearing on Thurs., Dec. 21 at 7.30 p.m. on the District-wide school safety plan prior to formal adoption. The Safety Plan is currently posted on the District website for public review.
Sewer Contract Renewal
A motion passed to approve the contract with the Village of Florida for sewer services to Golden Hill Elementary School at an annual cost of $25,000 for the 2018 school year.
Next Meeting Set for Dec. 21
The next School Board meeting will take place on Thurs., Dec. 21 at 7:30 p.m. at S.S. Seward Memorial Building, located at 51 N. Main St. in the Village of Florida.
