Greenwood Lake Superintendent Dr. Steven Cohen and School Board President Susan Selser welcomed the public during opening remarks made at the School Board meeting on Wed., Nov. 7. Selser then congratulated the Lady Lakers soccer team and all the fall sports teams.
“Congratulations Lady Lakers on an undefeated season, congratulations to all the fall sports teams on having a great season,” said Selser.
During the meeting, Elementary School Principal Dianne Connolly discussed Professional Development Days and Superintendent Conference Day for staff, such as Enhancing Professional Practice.
“Staff has begun unpacking the Danielson Rubrics that detail the components of best teaching. Teachers are also continuing to work with Makoto Yoshida of EastWest Math to incorporate mental math visualization techniques and the abacus to strengthen and develop number sense and computational fluency,” said Connolly.
Connolly also attended a “Next Gen Math Standards Workshop” to support staff with the upcoming shifts in math instruction. Principal Connolly recently hosted two coffee chats with parents. The topic was suggestions for improvement to the current dismissal procedures. The event was well received and informative.
Field trips have begun, as the first grade traveled to the Wright Family Farm and second grade students went on a STEM experience at the Castle Fun Center in Chester. The kindergarten trip was postponed due to weather and has been rescheduled. Third grade has a winter trip planned trip at Bardavon. All trips have links to the grade level curriculum.
Middle School Update
Principal Jeffrey Golubchick gave the following updates on the School. He said that students and staff are looking forward to the upcoming author visit from Peter Brown discussing the book “The Wild Robot.”
Lunch bunches are underway with students and their families discussing the book “The Wild Robot.” It’s been a successful and fun event.
High school visits to Chester and Warwick have been completed. Student shadowing is underway. Lunch bunches will be held with students to further discuss their high school options. The eighth grade has an upcoming trip to the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, and the 9-11 Memorial.
After Hours Activities
The Board continued their discussion on building access for after hours activities. Head Coaches and leaders will have key card access after they follow the security steps and procedures. This allows the buildings to remain safe and secure.
Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum, Instruction & Technology Sarah Hadden gave a presentation on Academics. Hadden presented on academic data regarding MAP tests, state testing results, and SRI scores.
Upcoming Meeting Information
A Board of Education Workshop will take place on Wed., Dec. 5 at 7 p.m. The next Board meeting will be held on Wed., Dec. 19. Both meetings will take place at the Middle School, located at 1247 Lakes Rd. in Monroe NY.
