Rain in the morning only made the Jeep Jam event at the Warwick Drive-In Theater better on Sun., Sept. 18. Jeep Jam was organized by Sam Cottrell, Thomas Fuller, Beth Wilson and members of the Warwick Drive-In to benefit Wheelers for the Wounded, a local organization which sponsors off-roading events for veterans. The event included a tricky tray, 50/50 raffle and giveaways. There was also a screening of “Mohave Desert Jeep Racing” in the evening. The event was sponsored by the Warwick Drive-In, Chrysler Jeep Dodge of Warwick and Wheelers for the Wounded of NJ.
The Jeep Jam attracted locals as well as people from all over the country. Participants could choose to off-road in their Jeeps on two trails created by the Drive-In staff. There was an “easy” trail for people new to Jeeps and off-roading and a “tricky” trail for more experienced drivers which included rock climbing over a stream bed. The event also included a “mud bog” for participants who wanted to have fun and get dirty by driving full speed into a large mud pit.
Among the organizers was local veteran and Village of Florida resident, Thomas W. Fuller. Fuller, known as “papa” to his friends and family, served with the 508th Engineer Detachment of the U.S. Army in Viet Nam from 1967-69. Fuller is also a member of the Board of Trustees in the Village of Florida and was named Citizen of the Year at this year’s Family Fun Fest in Florida. At the Jeep Jam, which benefits veterans, Fuller’s friends and family decided to surprise him with a tribute to his military service and the work he continues to do locally for the town and veterans.
Bobbie Sanford, of Quilts of Valor, was on hand to present Fuller with a beautiful handmade quilt “as a gesture of gratitude from a grateful nation.”
