Story by Katie Bisaro
Lions Club International, celebrating its 100th anniversary in 2018, is encouraging local Clubs to undertake Centennial Projects to celebrate the milestone. The Warwick Lions Club, celebrating 70 years itself in 2018, has decided to install a drinking fountain in Stanley-Deming Park for its Centennial Project.
Project Chairperson and Village of Warwick Trustee, George McManus, described the project to the Village of Warwick Board of Trustees at the Village Board meeting on Mon., Feb. 5.
Appropriately, the new drinking fountain will be a whimsical lion that will be a delightful addition to the park and will be compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). McManus explained that the location of the new drinking fountain will not be within the footprint of the proposed playground upgrades for the park.
The drinking fountain will be paid for by the Warwick Lions Club. In his letter to the Village, McManus requested the help of the Village Dept. of Public Works to install a concrete pad upon which the drinking fountain will sit and to provide the water hookup. McManus requested approval from the Board of Trustees to proceed with the project as the custom-made fountain must be ordered as soon as possible in order to arrive in May. To qualify as a “Centennial Project” for Lions Club International, the project must be completed by June.
Village Board members present at the meeting, Deputy Mayor Barry Cheney and Trustee Eileen Patterson, were in favor of the project.
