Story by Fifth Graders, Sami Brady & Ciara McVeigh
The Warwick Valley Middle School Mileage Club is a club where 200 kids from grades five to eight enjoy their time running and/or walking on the track. They have fun keeping track of their completed laps on a special card. When kids complete eight laps (two miles), they can get a purple or gold foot charm on their chain. The chain can be a necklace or a key chain. Special thanks to the Warwick Valley Middle School PTA, which donated the reward necklaces, key chains and charms.
At the end of the season, their cards and laps are counted. All of the cards get hung up in the Gamma Hallway for everyone to see. On a certain day the kids can collect their cards if they would like to keep them as mementos. Each student has the chance to run four times (once a week). Students have the option to go on a Monday, Wednesday or Friday. Many children ordered matching shirts for Mileage Club! This year the group ran 1,112.5 miles, which is 4,450 laps!
Special congratulations to the top sixth grader, Ben Walter, who ran 56 laps, and to the top female sixth grader, Marni Jones, who ran 37 laps. The top fifth graders are Hunter Stuart who ran 48 laps and Siobhan Kelly and Olivia Holland who each ran 36 laps. Shout out to sixth grader Luke Tannar, who ran 54 laps and got second place overall.
Special thanks to Mrs. Brady, the advisor of club, and Ms. Curran, one of the Mileage Club helpers. They both enjoyed seeing each child improve throughout the season. Everyone really appreciated it! Hope to see you in spring.
