The Greenwood Lake School Board business meeting was held on Wed., Jul. 5 at the Greenwood Lake Elementary School. The interim District Superintendent, Dr. Steven Cohen, put in his first day on the job on Wed., Jul. 5. Dr. Cohen is replacing Dr. Christine Ackerman while the search continues for a new Superintendent. Dr. Ackerman has taken a new position as Superintendent in Chappaqua, NY.
Dr. Cohen was appointed by the Board on Mon., Jun. 26. During his 40-year career, he has served as Superintendent, Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment, Department Chairperson, and Social Studies teacher. The position of interim Superintendent will be part-time for three days a week during the summer and possibly four days a week during the school year.
Tri-County School Bus Driver of the Year
Dr. Cohen presented Marlene Martin, a Greenwood Lake school bus driver, with the Tri-County School Bus Driver of the Year Award. Cohen remarked how significant it was that Martin had been chosen out of three counties.
Middle School Principal Search
Greenwood Lake is also looking for a Middle School Principal. Matthew Lawrence has accepted the position of high school principal in Mahopac, NY. Sarah Hadden, in her new role of Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum, Instruction and Technology, will be responsible for the search for the new principal. Parents and students are invited to serve on the selection committee.
Lee Stanton Resigns
G.L. School Board vice president Lee Stanton announced his resignation. He will be relocating to New York City, where he has been serving as a member of the N.Y.P.D., allowing him to apply for scholarship opportunities for law school.
“My journey as a School Board member and advocate for the District began about ten years ago when I was twelve years old. The decision to leave Greenwood Lake is an incredibly difficulty decision that I took a long time with,”said Stanton.
The motion to accept his resignation was accepted with regret.
During the meeting new School Board members, Mary Lally and Kevin Tuhy, were sworn-in for a three year term. Dr. Cohen also took his Oath of Office as the Interim Supt. of Schools and the Board appointed Michael Buckley as President and as the District Clerk.
Next Board Meeting
The next Board meeting will be held on Wed., Aug. 16 at 6:30 p.m. at the Elementary School gymnasium, located at 80 Waterstone Rd. in Greenwood Lake.
