The ninth annual Onion Eating Contest, sponsored by the Pine Island Chamber of Commerce, held at the Polish Legion of American Veterans’ Pavilion on Sun., Sept. 4 was not a tearful experience for the participants. There was nothing to cry about, just fun and smiles.
Of the six contestants who competed, five of them, Warwick Town Supervisor Michael Sweeton, Jermain Benuvilet, Kateryna Robinson, Travis Coleman and Robert Lutz each took the time to cut up the eight oz. onion donated by Quaker Creek. Only Ray Wesolowski, the winner, ate the onion like an apple in one minute and 32 seconds. Wesolowski, who has won the contest five times, but didn’t win last year, wanted to come back to reclaim his title.
