Blue skies and brightly colored eggs welcomed more than 150 children and parents on Sun., Mar. 25 as the Pine Island Recreation Department held its annual Easter Egg Hunt.
Bundled in hats and gloves and toting baskets of all shapes and sizes, children scampered around the Pine Island Park, each trying to collect some of the 3,000 plastic eggs filled with candy and hidden by volunteers of all ages, and also locate three particularly “eggs-tra” special eggs that contained winning tickets. These finders received large Easter baskets filled with toys.
“It’s so nice to see the kids having fun, and it’s just nice to give back to the community,” said Paulette Wilk Rudy, a long-time volunteer who chairs the Recreation Committee.
The Recreation Committee sponsored the event, which has taken place every year for about 25 years, according to Wilk Rudy.
While the hunt itself took only a few minutes, many families enjoyed the park’s playground before and after the festivities. The Easter Bunny was also in the midst of the Spring frolicking, waving and taking photos with smiling attendees.
Pine Island local Carmine Lamattina was especially festive, donning a rather small white Easter hat, and enjoying the afternoon with his wife, Marijane, and their children, Christian, 7, and Grace, 5.
“Nothing says Easter like bunnies, bonnets, and egg hunts!,” exclaimed a jovial Lamattina, adding the inquiry, “Why does the bunny bring eggs instead of carrots?”
Director of Summer Recreation Day Programs, which are sponsored by the Town of Warwick, Nancy Scheinert was also on hand distributing more candy.
Park neighbors, the Calone family, whose daughter, Cara, was crowned Pine Island’s First Pumpkin Fest Princess, were among many who appreciate the large recreational area.
“Our kids have a playset in our backyard, but we still come here. They love the swings and the pirate ship,” said Rich Calone, who also takes advantage of the field’s walking path with his wife, Donna.
In the warmer weather, Pine Island Recreation organizes such events as free movie nights in the Park in Pine Island NY. For more information, check out their Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/Pine-Island-Recreation-174126219322855/. To view more photos visit www.wvdispatch.com.
