The Florida Public Library will host its 45th Poetry Café for adults age 16 and up on Fri., Apr. 21 at 7 p.m. in the library, located at 4 Cohen Cir in Florida. Local poet Robert Milby will emcee the evening with readings by guest poets Michelle Johnson, of Dutchess County, and Ariana Den Blyker, of Orange County.
Johnson, a Jamaican-born poet, has been published in the Calling All Poets 2015 anthology. Den Blyker, a Pittsburgh native, now living in Washingtonville, NY, is the author of several books and chapbooks and is a small press publisher. Both poets are known on the Hudson Valley poetry scene, but are making their debut in Florida.
The evening will also feature an open mic session for anyone who wants to read or recite their own original or favorite poetry. The doors will open at 6:45 p.m. and the open mic begins at 7 p.m., followed by the featured poets and Milby’s reading of his own work. More open mic will round out the evening, plus a story from Madelyn Folino, library director and co-founder of the Black Dirt Storytelling Guild, which meets monthly at FPL.
A selection of free freshly brewed coffees and homemade desserts will be served. The library’s Poetry Café Series has been supported by the Friends of the FPL since its inception in 2006.
