“Play ball” was the phrase in the air at Schervier Pavilion on Tues., Apr. 3 as residents gathered to celebrate the opening of the 2018 baseball season. The staff at Schervier, a skilled nursing facility on the Warwick NY Campus of Bon Secours Charity Health System, showed which team they supported by the T-shirts and jerseys they were wearing.
Although the Major League baseball season was already in full swing, it was still a traditional opening day “Baseball Party” for the residents. During that afternoon they had an opportunity to listen to baseball songs like “Take Me Out to the Ball Game,” symbolically toss out the first ball, talk about baseball history, and enjoy hot dogs with mustard and relish, pretzels and ice cream.
One of the highlights of the party that brought more than a few laughs was a short skit performed by Kari Call, director of recreation and Dori Kaarlsen, a recreation aide. The two reenacted the famous Abbott and Costello baseball routine, “Who’s on first.”
For those too young to remember the humorous exchange between the comedians Bud Abbott and Lou Costello, the laughs came from the confusion that arises when the comics discuss a team of baseball players with names like Who, What and Tomorrow. Just before the live skit, residents watched the original routine by Abbott and Costello.
