Story by Kathleen Wilson
Chilling temps and drizzling raindidn’t dampen S.S. Seward’s Homecoming Parade on Sat., Oct. 13. The Village of Florida’s Main St. was packed with bystanders who braved the weather with umbrellas and raincoats to witness “Spartan Spirit” first hand. Homecoming floats echoed the parade’s theme of Steven Spielberg movies which have become classics.
It was a sight one imagines seeing only at Hollywood’s Universal Studies. The floats were all handmade and depicted movie greats including: Jaws, E.T., The Goonies, and Jurassic Park. And students marched alongside their float in costumes depicting characters from their respective movie.
The dinosaurs charged down Main St. unbothered by the rain with their protective natural coats. At the end of the parade route the band was playing and the crowds gathered. One by one the floats became a stage as students acted out scenes from their movie. The acting was outstanding and the applause was long and loud.
As the E.T. float passed someone said, “E.T. phone home,” a line from the movie. It wasn’t all floats though. Every Homecoming parade has its King and Queen and Seward’s Homecoming pair looked quite regal as they rode atop a shiny new convertible wearing crowns and sashes, while waving to onlookers and freely tossing candy treats to the children.
Kids of all ages were all smiles as they gathered candy with Mom’s holding umbrellas over them. The attendants from the Junior, Sophomore, and Freshman classes rode atop convertibles too with sport teams following.
Participating teams marching in the parade carried banners representing Modified Boys Soccer, Modified Girls Soccer, Modified Cross Country, Modified Volleyball, and Golden Hill Elementary FYS (Florida Youth Soccer) teams.
In true “Spartan Spirit” Seward’s mascot in all his regalia, together with students, parents, and friends willed away the rain and the sun shone through the clouds…..just in time for Seward’s Homecoming game. Go Spartan’s!
