The following column, written by Warwick Town Supervisor Michael Sweeton, has been published in the Mar. 8 issue of the Warwick Valley Dispatch:
The Orange County Agricultural and Farmland Protection Board (AFPB) would like to inform you that the Annual Agricultural District Review for Orange County Agricultural Districts 1 and 2 is quickly approaching with the open enrollment period taking place now through Fri., Mar. 31. During the annual review, properties may be added to the Agricultural Districts.
The State Legislature enacted the Agricultural Districts Law to conserve, protect and encourage the development and improvement of agricultural lands for the production of food and to conserve them as valued natural and ecological resources. Please note that under New York State Agricultural and Markets Law, the threshold requirements for lands to be included in the district is very low. A landowner need only show that the lands are predominately viable agricultural land and that there is a business plan for a farm operation. Unlike the requirements for agricultural assessment, the lands need not be actively farmed, nor must they meet the income requirements to qualify for inclusion in the agricultural district.
The enrollment form and additional information related to the Annual Agricultural District Review are available on the Orange County website at www.orangecountygov.com/Planning, within the Planning Department’s agriculture page.
The Town and a dedicated group of volunteers are working hard to launch the “Town of Warwick Friendly Visitor Program” to help those in our community that need an occasional helping hand. We are currently looking for volunteers who could spare an hour or two/week to take someone shopping, to a doctor or simply visit to provide companionship. If you have an interest and the time, please call 986-1124, press 1, then press 2 to leave your contact information. Help your neighbors age in place; the satisfaction is priceless.
