This past Nov. 11, representatives from Warwick’s American Legion Post 214 and VFW Post 4662 joined Schervier Pavilion (skilled nursing facility in the Village of Warwick) residents, families and staff to celebrate Veteran’s Day with the residents who proudly served in all branches of military service, many as far back as World War II. That prompted Barry O’Neill, a USAF veteran and member of Warwick’s VFW Post 4662, to suggest they return to sponsor a Christmas/Holiday party for those same veterans and their families.
On Tues., Dec. 20, representatives of both organizations gathered with a group of resident veterans in the facility’s holiday decorated Forest Hall dining room to enjoy refreshments and camaraderie. The program began with the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance by Director of Recreation Kari Call, who the veterans praised for her assistance in organizing the visit, followed by the playing of the National Anthem. She then introduced each resident veteran to the visitors with a brief description of his or her service history.
Shortly before VFW Post Commander Dan Burger’s welcoming remarks, past VFW Commander Mike Aiello made a surprise visit dressed as Santa Claus. He handed out gifts and posed for photographs. Everyone was treated to a video which brought back fond memories of the famous personality Bob Hope and his widely popular visits to entertain troops overseas.
