On Thurs., Jun. 8, Warwick Police Department officers conducted a traffic stop on Rte. 94 S. near Warwick Tpke. The vehicle was operated by Thomas J. Cancel, 25, from Warwick. A subsequent search of the vehicle by Warwick officer Kevin Halsey and K-9 dog, Nicky, resulted in the discovery of 12.4 pounds of suspected marihuana and a small quantity of marihuana oil.
As a result of this investigation, Warwick narcotics officers obtained a search warrant for the Cancel residence at 327 State Rte. 94 in Warwick. Officers recovered an additional 15 pounds of suspected marihuana, 233 vials of marihuana oil, 3.8 pounds of marihuana wax, an illegal firearm, scales, money counting machines, and items commonly used to produce marihuana oil. In addition, officers seized $97,000 in US currency and a 2006 Toyota pickup truck.
Cancel was charged with two counts of criminal possession of marihuana in the 1st degree, criminal possession of a controlled substance in the 7th degree, criminal possession of a controlled substance in the 4th degree and criminal possession of a weapon in the 4th degree.
Cancel was arraigned before Warwick Town Justice Peter Barlet and remanded to the Orange County Jail in lieu of $20,000 bail. This investigation is continuing with the assistance of Federal and State agencies.
