Story by Janmarie Foschini
The East Arm Rowing Club, located at 69 Sterling Rd. in Greenwood Lake, is a hidden gem in the Village. The club was founded in the 1980s by Simon Haysom and John Sullivan. It began as a commercial operation – Sullivan Floatation, with the sale of single boats, with rowing and coaching lessons offered by the co-founders. An original piece of the dock from Sullivan Floatation is still on the club site.
In 1990, the East Arm Rowing Club was established as a center for rowing in the NY Metropolitan area. Since then the club has grown and attracts members from around the area. The club includes men, women and young adults with all levels of experience.
The club offers a learn to row program for seventh and eighth graders and also hosts the Tuxedo and Warwick High School crew clubs. Several of the members are currently training for the Head of the Charles Regatta to be held in October in Boston, MA. Other members simply enjoy the club for recreational purposes.
Simon stated the members “show phenomenal demonstration of all the best features of human beings, energy, working together, intuitive and sheer hard work.”
Longtime member, Captain Jim Cody, is one of the most decorated masters rowers. He has competed and won on both national and international levels. Jim’s wife, Kate, is a leader for the women’s team and one of the most decorated masters and competitive rowers.
Frank Petrucci began with the Warwick High School Crew Club and has since become one of the most knowledgeable coaches for the club. Frank has rowed for the United States World Cup.
Many members can be found training at all times of the day. Robert Wagner, a club member for 14, trains daily and has an amazing winning record and is a National Champion. When members are unable to train on the lake, the club offers indoor stationary rowing machines with beautiful lake views.
The club welcomes new members with all levels of experience. The club participates in the yearly Regatta on Greenwood Lake as well as competitive racing as far as Tennessee. For more information about the club call 477-3076.
