The Warwick varsity girls’ tennis team attended the Section IX Tournament on Wed., Oct. 18 to qualify to play at States. Out of 27 high schools that make up Section IX athletics in NYS, only nine players make it to the team. The state tournament will be held in from Sat., Oct. 28 to Tues., Oct. 31 in Latham, NY. Two Warwick varsity players are part of that team. After a grueling week of intense matches, senior Jacqueline Grundfast and junior Ava Ghobadian qualified.
Grundfast and Ghobadian were the only doubles team to make it to both the county and section finals and they took the county doubles title. They were the only doubles team in the division to have eight consecutive wins. The girls’ varsity team and Coach Susan Filingeri came off of a very strong season, taking home the Division II Varsity Tennis Title for Orange County for a second year in a row.
Honorable mentions go to two other Warwick doubles teams that competed at sections with excellent performances. Co-captain, senior Uliana Kitar and her partner, junior Stephanie Menoutis made it to the semi-final. Freshman Gabby Donohue and her partner Samantha Killin, eighth graders, made it to the quarter finals.
The Warwick team would like to thank the District and the athletic director, Gregory Sirico, for all of their support all season. They would also like to thank JV tennis coach William Zwart for stepping in to help coach all the teams at counties and sections.
