The Warwick Valley High School varsity wrestling team honored their seniors on Fri., Feb. 2 after their final home match against Washingtonville High School. Every year these athletes are celebrated as they wrestle one last time at home, as many of their families and friends are in attendance.
Wrestling is a family sport and while it may seem to be singular on the mat, these teammates are like brothers to one another. The seniors who wrestled on Friday night included Andrew Wierzbicki, Sam Langer, Vincent Carney, and Harrison Parelli, who won his match by pinning his opponent. The boys left proud, winning the dual meet against Washingtonville.
Somner Has A Lot To Celebrate
Senior swimmer Chris Somner had a lot to celebrate this week. Falling on his birthday, the OCIAA Division 2 Championships took place on Fri., Feb. 2 at Washingtonville High School. Winning his first post season individual title, Somner out swam his opponents in the 100 yard freestyle event. He has received the most valuable swimmer award three times in the past and a fourth award is not out of the question.
Girls’ Basketball has Division 2 Win
Emily Welling and Lauren Desrats led the girls’ varsity basketball team to a Division 2 win against Minisink High School on Wed., Jan. 31. Welling accumulated 19 points and 13 rebounds, while Desrats earned 13 points. These included four three-point shots. The team won again on Fri., Feb. 2 against the Newburgh Free Academy Gold Backs.
