The Warwick Valley High School girls’ varsity tennis team competed in the Orange County Interscholastic Athletic Association (OCIAA) Tournament on Oct. 10-12, held at Match Point Tennis in Goshen, NY.
The doubles competition was held on Wed., Oct. 10 with 31 qualifying teams from the OCIAA League, which included three divisions of 17 teams in Orange County. Thurs., Oct. 11 featured singles matches.
Competition resumed on Fri., Oct. 12 for the semi-final round. Warwick’s #1 tournament seed challenged Washingtonville’s #1 doubles team (#4 seed). On the opposite court, Warwick’s wild card team, #3 seed of the tournament, competed against Newburgh’s #1 doubles team (#2 tournament seed).
Warwick defeated Washingtonville (6-1, 6-3) and Warwick’s wild card team defeated Newburgh Free Academy for a tight finish with match scores of (6-1, 7-5) setting the stage for an “All Warwick” final.
Final match play began with Warwick’s #1 varsity doubles team of Ava Ghobadian and Stephanie Menoutis against Sammy Killin and Gabby Donohue, Warwick’s wild card. Both teams huddled with varsity coach Filingeri and JV coach Zwart, who reiterated important tactics of team tennis including, “Smarter, not harder,” “It’s point-by-point,” “Hit where they’re not,” “Don’t double fault,” but above all, “Have fun.”
After the huddle both Warwick teams were set for the challenge and played hard. The wild card team took the final match winning 6-0, 6-4 for the League Championship Title!
