WFD Holds Monthly Extrication Drill

Local News News & Updates

The Warwick Fire Department (WFD) reports that for the week ending Sun., Nov. 17, the WFD has responded to 387 calls for service to date.

On Mon., Nov. 11 the WFD participated in the Annual Veterans Day Parade and Services.  The WFD thanks Veterans including firefighters who serve and have served. The WFD also completed checks of apparatus and buildings and grounds.  On Tues., Nov. 12, the WFD District held a work session at Station 2 on West St.

On Wed., Nov. 13 members of the WFD held a mandatory bail out and requalification’s drill at Warwick Station #4. The Department requires all interior structurally qualified firefighters to complete a bail out rope course with a descending device from a bailout window annually.  All interior firefighters are issued a 50 foot rope bailout bag and harness in the event of an emergency that a firefighter may have to leave a room on fire and descend from a window safely to the ground.  The firefighters also completed a masked confidence requalification’s course with a Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA). The firefighters must display self rescue techniques from reduced profile to the quick release method.

On Thurs., Nov. 14, the WFD held their monthly extrication drill at Specht’s on a 2019 Volvo S60 that was donated by Volvo Car USA, LLC from Rockleigh, NJ (pre-production vehicle).   A member’s family member works at the factory, and they donated the car for training.  A “real life” scenario was staged, with the driver trapped in the vehicle.  The members broke into two teams and worked to remove the car from the victim.  They worked on entry on the hood, trunk, doors, flipped the roof and raised the dash. The Volvo is one of the strongest cars made with boron steel cages on all pillars. It was a great experience for all attending. Thank you to firefighter Robb Loforese and the members who attended this very informative drill.  Thank you Specht’s for providing their property for the drill.

On Sat., Nov. 16, the WFD placed lights on the Christmas Tree at the Old School Baptist Meeting House property on High St.  Join the community and the WFD on Fri., Nov. 29 at 6 p.m. for caroling, lighting of the tree and to meet Santa.

On Sun., Nov. 17, the WFD responded to a commercial structure fire at the Warwick Valley Auto Body business on Main St. Please keep the Zimmerli Family and the employees in your continued thoughts and prayers.
