Supervisor Sweeton: Thanks to Town DPW

Local News News & Updates

I want to publically thank the men and women of the Town Department of Public Works on their performance for what was, without a doubt, one of the most trying storms of the past 20 years.  Our crews and those around us battled ice, sleet, snow and a tremendous amount of downed trees with wires over a period of 48 hours.  There was not a time when roads were not open for emergency workers and those with essential jobs they needed to get to.  Kudos also to the Police, Fire and Ambulance for also being active and on the job throughout the storm to ensure our safety.  As possibly the hardest hit Town in the County we came through with flying colors, and we have these fine public servants to thank.

The Town of Warwick has opened a temporary brush pile for residents to bring tree limbs/branches from the recent storm.  The area will be at Union Corners Town Park on the athletic field side, just to the right as you enter the parking lot.

Once again I would like to remind residents of the Town’s snow regulations: From November 1 through April 1 of the succeeding year the parking of vehicles is hereby prohibited on all highways and other public property of the Town at any time during inclement winter weather. Vehicles in violation of this article will be towed at the owner’s expense. Heeding of this regulation is especially critical for safety in some of our more densely populated areas like Wickham village, Kings Estates/Sugar Hills and many of our hamlets.

I also remind property owners that any person who throws, shovels, plows or places snow or ice onto a public street, highway or right-of-way shall be guilty of a violation and subject to a fine not exceeding $250.  These regulations are meant to keep you and your neighbors safe from accidents that can happen when, after the plow trucks have cleared the road, snow is pushed back into them creating driving hazards.

The next regular meeting of the Town Board will be held on Thurs., Dec. 12 at 7:30 p.m. in the Warwick Town Hall, 132 Kings Highway.

The above column, written by Warwick Town Supervisor Michael Sweeton, has been published in the Dec. 11 issue of the Warwick Valley Dispatch.
