Buckley to Resign from G.L. School Board

     With much regret, the Greenwood Lake Board of Education accepted the resignation of Board member Michael Buckley, effective Tues., June 30.  During the BOE meeting on Wed., Feb. 19, BOE President Susan Selser wished Buckley well, stating, “He will be greatly missed.”

     Superintendent of Schools Sarah Hadden thanked Buckley for his many years of service and dedication to the students of the District. Buckley was also a past BOE President and volunteered his time to serve on many BOE committees over the years.

First Day of School 2020-21

  The 2020-2021 student calendar was adopted by the Board of Education. The first day of school for students for the 2020-2021 school year will be Thurs., Sept. 3.

HPV Vaccine Concerns

     Due to a parent letter of concern, the BOE had a discussion regarding the HPV vaccine. After discussion, the BOE is going to move forward with a letter to New York State opposing the proposed legislation requiring the HPV vaccine for students.

Celebrations & Upcoming Programs

     Staff members are preparing for the spring sports season, and coaches were appointed.

     Elementary School Principal Dianne Connolly stated students closed out their month-long whole school reading event. Upon completion of the reading program, students attended two events: an art lesson provided by parent Martin Benard, who shared his artistic knowledge in a lesson on “How to Draw Bugs,” and a presentation by insect zoo entomologist, Frank Somma, who brought his creepy, crawly collection of critters for students to see and learn about up close.

     Family Math Night was very successful. Families learned and played a variety of games. Connolly received positive feedback and compliments from all those who attended.

     Students also celebrated the one hundredth day of school on Fri., Feb. 21 with hands on math activities geared for each grade level.

     Middle School Principal Jeffrey Golubchick advised that there will also be several family lunchtime book discussions in the library media center.

     The third annual community basketball game will be held on Thurs., Feb. 27 when guests can enter to win tricky trays and watch students play faculty in a basketball game. Admission is $5 per person; the event will begin at 6 p.m. in the Middle School gymnasium, located at 1247 Lakes Rd. in Monroe.

     Three Board of Education seats will be up for election at the Tues., May 19 budget vote and election. Nominating petitions are available by contacting Mary DePietro, District Clerk.

Next Meeting

     The next BOE meeting will take place on Wed., Mar. 18 at 7 p.m. in the Elementary School gymnasium, located at 80 Waterstone Rd. in Greenwood Lake.
