Village of Florida Non-Essential Employees Furloughed

The Village of Florida Board of Trustees passed a resolution on Wed., May 13, to furlough all non-police department and non-essential part-time employees who do not qualify for extended family leave effective Sun., Apr. 26.

The furloughs are a result of the Village’s unprecedented economic strain during the COVID-19 pandemic. The Village had provided at least two weeks paid sick leave to every employee unable to work due to the pandemic in accordance with the Families First Coronavirus Response Act.

According to the resolution, the Village is not in a financial position to pay employees who are unable to work either on site or remotely. All employees will be restored to existing rates of pay at the end of NY Pause for the Mid-Hudson region.

Memorial Day Parade Cancelled

Due to public health concerns in the midst of the COVID–19 pandemic, American Legion Post #1250 has cancelled this year’s Memorial Day Parade that was to be held on Mon., May 25. A short, private ceremony will be held at the monument to honor those who lost their lives serving the country.

Sewer Upgrades Receive Price Quote

The Village of Florida received a price quote from TAM Enterprises, Inc. for much-needed sewer upgrades to the clarifier and aeration chambers. The price quote came in at $84,820.00 and was the Orange County-approved bid. The Village of Florida Attorney is still reviewing the contract between TAM Enterprises and the Village.

New Stop Signs

The intersections of Glenmere Ave. and Rose St., and Glenmere Ave. and Werner Ave. will now be three-way stop intersections. The new changes were made in an attempt to slow traffic in these areas for safety reasons. 

Weaver Resigns as Village Treasurer

Village Treasurer Mark Weaver has resigned his position on the Village Board effective Sat., June 13. The Village Board wished him the best as they look for a new Village Treasurer during these uncertain economic times.

Jayne St. Bridge Closed

The Jayne St. bridge has been deemed unsafe according to a report received by the Village. It will be closed to all traffic from Maple Ave. beginning on Mon., June 15.
