There are more home fires in winter than in any other season. Half of all home heating fires happen in December, January and February. As you stay cozy and warm this winter season, be Warwick fire smart!
Christmas Tree Disposal
Now that Christmas is over dispose of the tree safely – wrap the tree and safely remove the tree from the home not passing a space heater or fireplace.
Winter Storm Preparation
Winter storms can happen almost anywhere causing problems. The Warwick Fire Department advises the community to know what to do before, during and after a storm. This will help keep you and your family safe from a winter fire.
Test all smoke alarms: Do this at least once a month. This way you will know they are working. Install carbon monoxide alarms in your home. Test the alarms.
Plan two ways out of the home in case of an emergency. Clear driveway and front walk of ice and snow. This will provide easy access to your home.
Make sure your house number can be seen from the street to make sure firefighters will be able to find your home.
Be ready in case the power goes out: Have flashlights or other battery-powered lighting on hand and fresh batteries. Never use candles.
Stay aware of winter weather: Listen to the television or radio for updates. Watch for bulletins online.
Check on neighbors: Check on others who may need help.
Generators: Should be used outdoors. Keep them away from windows and doors. Do not run a generator inside the garage, even if the door is open.
Stay away from downed wires: Report any downed wires to authorities.
Be ready if the heat stops working: Use extra layers of clothing and blankets to stay warm. If you use an emergency heat source, keep anything that can burn at least three feet away.
Portable heaters: Turn off portable heaters when you leave the room. Turn them off when you go to bed. Nearly half of all space heater fires involve electric space heaters. The leading information and knowledge resource on fire, electrical and related hazards is the National Fire Protection Association.
WFD Receives Mask Donation
Thanks to Leo Kaytes Ford of Warwick and the Ford Motor Company 2,200 face masks were donated to the Warwick Fire Department. This donation will help prevent the spread of Covid-19 amongst WFD members and the community they serve. The WFD greatly appreciates the donation!
WFD On the Job
The Warwick Fire Department responded to 403 calls for service in 2020. In 2021 the WFD has responded to 1 call for service to date.
Those interested in joining the Warwick Fire Department, age 16 and older, call 986-3473; contact WFD via social media on Facebook or Instagram; email wfd634c@yahoo.com; or stop by any firehouses any evening to speak with a Fire Officer about joining. The best evenings are Mondays at 7 p.m. or the first Tuesday of the month at 7 p.m.
