STATEMENT FROM SENATOR JAMES SKOUFIS

Politics

New York State is home to over 250 state parks, historic sites, campgrounds, and trails. 250 opportunities to escape from the hustle of everyday life and to unplug from the digital world. Last year, 88.3 million people ventured out to explore these natural landscapes. This number broke records, contributing to the 66% increase seen in state park attendance over the last two decades. Compared to 2023, four million more park visitors took advantage of state initiatives aimed at expanding access to the outdoors.

With the demands of our fast-paced, sometimes overwhelming lives, it’s a gift that the accessible state parks across New York provide a convenient getaway. Maybe it was the park system’s 100th anniversary, or the solar eclipse, or even the free swimming initiatives–whatever it was, the record numbers of guests welcomed by New York State Parks last year proves the true necessity of accessible, outdoor retreats.

I have long been an advocate of accessible outdoor spaces in our community, and am glad the state’s ‘Unplug and Play’ initiative will allow for improvements to the park system and community centers – with playgrounds – around New York.

As the weather starts to warm up and with more resources for people to get outside and go to state parks, no doubt attendance numbers will break records again this year. There truly is nothing better than fresh air and I remain dedicated to further expanding this access to healthy recreation.
