Sheriff-Photo-2--e1708695452816 Safe Boating Season: A Message from the Orange County Sheriff’s Marine UnitAs we embark on another exciting boating season, the Orange County Sheriff’s Marine Unit would like to remind all boaters of the importance of safety on the water. This time of year brings joy to countless individuals and families, but it is essential to prioritize safety to prevent accidents and ensure an enjoyable experience for all.

Statistics show that numerous boating accidents occur annually due to negligence and a lack of proper precautions. To mitigate these risks, it is crucial for all boaters to adhere to established safety guidelines.

One of the most critical safety measures is the consistent use of life jackets. Unexpected accidents can occur, and wearing a properly fitting life jacket can significantly increase the chances of survival in the event of a mishap. Both adults and children should always wear life jackets while on the water to prevent drowning incidents.

In addition to life jackets, boaters should familiarize themselves with local boating regulations. Understanding speed limits, no-wake zones, and right-of-way rules is vital for preventing accidents and ensuring the safety of all on the water. Ignoring these regulations not only jeopardizes your safety but also endangers others.

Additionally, the operation of a vessel while under the influence of alcohol or drugs poses a significant risk. Impaired boating is a leading cause of accidents and fatalities. It is imperative to designate a sober driver or make alternative transportation arrangements if alcohol is to be consumed while boating.

By adhering to these safety measures and guidelines, boaters can contribute to a safer boating season for everyone. Let us all commit to making safety our top priority and ensuring that this boating season is both enjoyable and accident-free. Training in safe boating is available and if you have not already attended a course Sheriff Arteta recommends you register as soon as you can before the boating season becomes active.

The Orange County Sheriff’s Office will be providing free Boater Safety Courses. To register for this free course please go to https://parks.ny.gov/boating/education.aspx . If you have any questions regarding Boater Safety Training please contact Deputy Tim Hluchan at thluchan@orangecountygov.com.
