The New York State Sheriffs’ Association publicly announced they had accredited the Orange County Sheriff’s Office Civil Division on May 1st, 2025, at the Orange County Legislative Meeting. Achieving accreditation required a year and a half of hard work to meet 121 standards set by the Association. This lengthy process included an in-depth review and update of the agency’s policies and procedures. The Orange County Sheriff’s Office is now one of only thirty-one of the sixty-two Sheriff’s Offices in New York to be accredited.
Many people have a limited understanding of civil enforcement’s vital role in the legal system. Our Civil Office acts as a bridge between the courts and the public. Deputies and civilians work together to efficiently execute court orders, helping to resolve non-criminal disputes when other options fall short and serving legal documents. Orange County is one of New York’s fastest-growing counties, with a population surpassing 410,000 as of July 2024. The Sheriff’s Office operates one of the busiest civil divisions, processing nearly 6,000 court documents in 2024, including eviction warrants and orders of protection, while managing over $7 million in owed funds.
The accreditation designation ensures best practices in accounting, legal compliance, process service, and staff training, thereby reducing risks for the county. The office must adhere to the accreditation guidelines to maintain accredited status. The office will undergo periodic reassessments and comply with additions or changes to the standards as necessary.
