STATEMENT FROM SENATOR JAMES SKOUFIS

Politics

My team went above and beyond, and I fought for Orange County – and all of New York – right through the end of legislative session last week. Here are some of the final numbers:

  • 94 of our bills passed the Senate, making significant headway in terms of advancing legislation.
  • 43 passed both chambers, and will be heading to the Governor’s desk for her signature before the end of the year.
  • Voted against creating new taxes 114 times
  • Voted independently from my party 214 times, opposing bills that weren’t right for Orange County, making me one of the most independent legislators in Albany

This is the largest number of bills I’ve ever shepherded over the finish line, and the most passed by any other legislator this session.

These numbers represent a huge effort from my staff and include legislation aimed at protecting children while they’re in school; ensuring transparency and accountability from elected officials and agencies; changes aimed at confronting the affordability crisis and easing the burden on families; and a slew of municipal bills that will make our communities run smoothly and efficiently.

While legislative session has wrapped for now, I’m not slowing down. Earlier this week I joined my colleague Senator Rivera to announce a joint investigative hearing on the CDPAP transition – the program that supports caregivers and their work to keep New Yorkers in their home instead of nursing homes. The transition faced significant challenges, which led to serious questions from consumers, providers, and legislators like myself. This hearing on July 9 will allow us to pursue answers and provide clarity for all involved. You can find more information and follow the livestream here

It has been an honor to represent Orange County in Albany this year, and I’m looking forward to continuing to fight for all of our priorities.
