E-Bike Safety

Police and Fire

Sheriff-Photo-2--e1708695452816 E-Bike SafetyElectric bicycles (e-bikes) are becoming more popular in Orange County. We are seeing an increased number of e-bikes on the Heritage Trail and in our communities. E-bikes are a fun and efficient way to get around, but they come with some added responsibilities. E-bikes and electric scooters are permitted on certain streets and highways in New York State, but these guidelines vary by municipality. Be sure to check your local laws and ordinances before operating.

As your Sheriff, my deputies and I want everyone to enjoy e-bikes safely and legally.

Here are some tips to remember when operating an e-bike:

  • Always obey traffic signals and signs.
  • Yield to pedestrians.
  • Use hand signals when turning or stopping.
  • Do not carry more passengers than the bike is designed for.
  • Wear bright clothing and use lights and reflectors.
  • Never ride while distracted by a phone or headphones.
  • Keep both hands on the handlebars and watch for cars and pedestrians.
  • Do not ride on sidewalks, unless permitted by local law

Riders under 18 must wear helmets; however, all riders are encouraged to wear helmets when riding. E-bikes are not permitted on sidewalks unless explicitly designated as such by local laws. E-bikes are not toys. They’re motorized vehicles. When operated recklessly or without supervision, they can lead to serious injuries or collisions.

Let’s work together to keep our community safe. Ride smart, stay visible, and always follow the law.
