As summer winds down in Orange County, families are preparing for their return to school. This is an exciting time, but it’s also one that requires extra attention to safety both on our roads and in our communities. As your Sheriff, I want to share a few reminders to help ensure a safe and smooth transition into the school year.
Drivers should be especially alert as school buses return to our roadways. Remember, it is illegal to pass a stopped school bus with its red lights flashing, whether you are behind it or approaching from the opposite direction.
With the additional traffic on the roadways, please allow extra time for your morning and afternoon commute. Avoid distractions behind the wheel. If you are late, the time to make up minutes is not in the vehicle, including speeding, “multi-tasking”, finishing getting ready, eating breakfast, or starting a morning meeting. Get to your destination safely and plan accordingly.
Obey school speed limits and pay close attention to crossing guards. If you are dropping your child off, use designated areas rather than stopping in unsafe locations. These areas are typically clearly marked in front of the school and are safer for students and staff to get into the building.
In addition to road safety, please remind your children never to talk to strangers and to always walk in groups when possible. Encourage them to be aware of their surroundings and to report anything unusual to a trusted adult right away.
On behalf of the men and women of the Sheriff’s Office, I wish all our students and families a safe, successful school year.
