Sheriff-Photo-2--e1708695452816 Junior Police Academy Kicks Off with Successful First SessionThe Orange County Sheriff’s Office proudly wrapped up its first-ever Junior Police Academy, a weeklong program designed to introduce local youth to the world of law enforcement. The first session was open to students entering 3rd through 5th grade who were eager to learn and ready to have fun.

Throughout the week, cadets explored various aspects of public safety and policing. They listened to informative presentations from several specialized units, including the Investigations Division, the Technology Support Unit (Drone Unit), the Special Operations Group, and even a 911 dispatcher. The Goshen Volunteer Ambulance Corps and the County Attorney’s Office also came to visit, bringing some valuable information to our cadets.

The curriculum focused on age-appropriate lessons in how to call for help, online safety, making good decisions, and understanding what it means to be a police officer. The cadets also had an introduction to CPR and AED use. Cadets left with a basic understanding of when CPR is needed, how many compressions to give, where to place them, and how to locate an AED.  Just ask them, I’m sure they can point it out!

The academy tested their physical fitness, drill, and marching movements. Starting off shy, they pushed themselves to make new friends and step out of their comfort zones, all while having fun!

This program is one of many that our Office participates in to strengthen the relationship between law enforcement and the youth of our community. By building trust and understanding from a young age, the Junior Police Academy fosters a sense of respect, responsibility, and interest in public service.

The next session, for students entering grades 6 through 8, begins next week. For those interested in future opportunities, we encourage families to follow the Orange County Sheriff’s Office on social media for updates and registration information for next summer.

We are excited about the success of our first session and look forward to expanding this program in the years to come.
