GOSHEN – The Orange County Legislature is going to allocate $600,000 for an engineering and design study of the county’s former Camp LaGuardia property in Chester and Blooming Grove for development as a county park.
County Executive Steven Neuhaus has proposed the idea with County Legislature Majority Leader Leigh Benton saying it has widespread support among lawmakers.
“I believe there are some sections of the property that should be offered to farmers, the black dirt area so that we could actually be growing food off of that particular area of the property rather than creating the park, because it is good black dirt area,” he said.
The former shelter for homeless men from New York City totals 258 acres. Orange County purchased it from the Big Apple years ago and it has remained unused and decaying since then.
