As students across Orange County settle back into the classroom, the Sheriff’s Office is proud to announce the return of its dedicated team of School Safety Deputies. This year, 62 deputies are assigned to 26 schools across eight school districts in Orange County.
Many Orange County schools are fortunate to benefit from a dedicated team of professionals committed to the safety and well-being of our students, teachers, and staff. The School Security Deputy (SSD) Program brings a strong layer of protection and peace of mind to campuses across the county.
Each SSD is a certified law enforcement officer, either active or honorably retired, who has chosen to continue their service by working part-time to safeguard our schools. These men and women are more than just security personnel; they are seasoned professionals who bring years of experience, training, and a commitment to public safety.
After joining the program, SSDs undergo advanced training tailored specifically to the school environment that continues throughout their employment. This ensures they are well-prepared not just to respond to emergencies, but to be proactive in creating a safe space for learning. They are held to the same professional and ethical standards as any other deputy in the agency, reinforcing the high level of trust the community places in them.
The primary goal of the SSD Program is to create a safe and positive environment that fosters the education of students. SSDs are ready to respond instantly to any act of violence that threatens students or staff. They also serve as role models, providing a positive image of law enforcement.
Most importantly, their presence contributes to a visible, reassuring sense of safety for everyone on campus. Parents, teachers, and students can focus on education, knowing that dedicated professionals are on hand to keep them safe.
I am proud of our School Security Deputies and grateful for their continued service to our community.
