Ronnie Williams Convicted of Assault in the Third Degree

Orange County District Attorney David M. Hoovler announced that on Thursday, October 16, 2025, Ronnie Williams, age 55, of Newburgh, was convicted following a jury trial in the Town of Newburgh Court of Assault in the Third Degree for a violent attack in a retail store in the Town of Newburgh in January, 2025.  Following the conviction, Williams was remanded to the Orange County Jail in lieu of bail and is scheduled to be sentenced on December 2, 2025.

As alleged at trial and in documents filed and statements made in court, on January 4, 2025, a female shopper in a retail store in the Town of Newburgh became enraged when store employees would not process a return in the fashion she requested.  After engaging in a verbal argument with employees and other customers, the female called the defendant, who was in a vehicle outside the store, to come inside to “beat everybody up.”  When the defendant entered the store, he aggressively approached another female shopper and struck her in the face.  When a twenty-two (22) year old female employee attempted to stop the defendant from continuing to strike the female shopper, the defendant turned to the employee, grabbed her by the throat and slammed her into a counter.  As a result, the female employee sustained injuries to her ear, neck and back.

District Attorney Hoovler thanked the Town of Newburgh Police Department for their investigation which led to the arrest of the defendant.

“Physical violence is never an appropriate response to settle a disagreement,” said District Attorney David M. Hoovler. “Through the brave testimony of the courageous victim, together with video of the assault, prosecutors from my Office proved to the jury beyond a reasonable doubt that this defendant’s violent acts were criminal.  I thank the Town of Newburgh Police Department for their rapid response in this case that ensured this defendant did not cause harm to anyone else in the store.  We will take whatever steps are necessary to seek justice on behalf of victims of violent crime.”

District Attorney Hoovler highly commended Assistant District Attorney David Greenwald who prosecuted the case.

This criminal charge is merely an allegation that a defendant has committed a violation of the criminal law, and it is not evidence of guilt. All defendants are presumed innocent and entitled to a fair trial, during which it will be the State of New York’s burden to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
