Warwick, NY – September 29, 2025 – The Town of Warwick is proud to announce the opening of a brand-new two-mile hiking trail, connecting Orange County’s Hickory Hills Golf Course with a newly constructed parking area on Cascade Road. This long-anticipated project, nearly two decades in the making, represents a significant investment in the community’s commitment to recreation, open space, and access to the outdoors.

Nearly twenty years ago, the Town of Warwick secured initial federal funds for the project through the support of Congresswoman Sue Kelly. Over the following years, the Town and Orange County completed several key property acquisitions necessary to make the trail possible. During that time, however, federal trail-construction regulations changed and costs rose, requiring additional funding to move the project forward. Orange County ultimately stepped in to commit the remaining funds needed for construction.

With a firm deadline of October 1, 2025, to use the federal funds or lose them, Town Supervisor Jesse Dwyer initiated the trail’s construction in early spring. In just a few months, the project was completed, showcasing what can be accomplished when municipal and county governments work together with urgency and purpose.

The completed trail features a scenic two-mile walking path, a 45-foot timber bridge spanning Long House Creek, and benches at both trailheads to provide resting points for hikers. The trail is clearly marked and easy to follow, offering an accessible and family-friendly recreational opportunity, though some steep grades may be challenging for certain users.

“This trail is the result of years of perseverance and collaboration,” said Town Supervisor Jesse Dwyer. “By preserving open space and expanding recreational opportunities, Warwick continues its proud tradition of creating places for residents and visitors alike to connect with nature. We are grateful to our county partners and to those who helped secure the original federal funding that made this possible. The trail could not have been built without the help and support of the following people who played a role: past Warwick Supervisor Mike Sweeton, County Executive Steve Neuhaus, County Legislator Barry Cheney, Parks Commissioner Travis Ewald, Recreation Director Sam Walter, the dedicated crews of A-Tech Concrete and most importantly, trail designer and on site inspector from HDR Eddie Tolentino.”

The new hiking trail is officially open for public use. Residents and visitors are encouraged to enjoy the natural beauty it offers and experience firsthand the community’s continued commitment to outdoor recreation and preservation.
