When the Warwick Wildcats girls’ volleyball team stepped onto the court Saturday, it wasn’t just the end of a three-game winning streak—it was the closing chapter of a season that turned into something historic for Warwick, New York.

Despite the 0-2 loss against the Webster Schroeder Warriors, the Wildcats have every reason to raise their heads high. Earlier this month, Warwick captured the Section 9 Class AA Volleyball Championship for the first time in 30 years, knocking off the powerhouse Cornwall Dragons—who had reigned for two decades—by rallying back down two sets to one and closing the match 25-22, 27-29, 25-14, 25-22, 15-12.

That landmark win earned the Wildcats a berth in the Class AA Girls Volleyball regional tournament — another first for the program.

By the time Warwick reached state-level competition, the Wildcats had earned a hard-fought 12–6 record and a reputation for resilience. Their postseason surge was powered not by any single standout, but by a collective determination that showed up in every set—whether through relentless defense, disciplined passing, or timely offensive bursts. Match after match, the team demonstrated consistent grit, including six straight games with double-digit dig totals and a unified effort that helped carry them through their historic run to the state stage.

The Final Match: Loss but Legacy

On Nov. 22, Warwick’s grand run came to a halt in state tournament pool play, falling to Garden City 1-2, following Webster Schroeder 0-2. The defeat dropped the Wildcats’ official mark to 12-8, but the number fails to reflect the leaps the program has taken.
Webster Schroeder, meanwhile, came into each match with near-machine momentum—they entered the game having won 19 of their last 20, went on to win the NYSPHSAA Class AA state title, capping a 36–3–1 season, while Warwick closed its historic campaign as state medalists in pool play.

For the Warwick community, this season is less about the loss and more about what was achieved. The girls’ volleyball squad has uprooted decades of history, asserted itself among the elite, and left a foundation for the future. The school district’s athletics department called the turn “a collectively historic fall season.”

Coach Shawn Thomas noted after the Webster Schroeder match: “We prepared the most we could prepare for.” And in the wins before, they proved it. Their comeback over Cornwall wasn’t luck—it was belief, unified execution, and refusal to quit.

Yes—the winning streak ended. But the true streak might just be beginning: Warwick’s march into new territory. Their first sectional championship in three decades, their first state-level appearance—they’ve reset expectations.

And in sports, sometimes the most important wins are the ones that change everything—even when you don’t end with the trophy in your hands.
