The Warwick Fire District will hold an important vote on Tuesday, December 9, 2025, from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM at the Warwick Firehouse, 25 Church Street, Warwick, NY. Residents will decide whether to approve an amendment to the district’s Length of Service Award Program (LOSAP), a retirement benefit program for our volunteer firefighters.

What is LOSAP and Why Does It Matter?
LOSAP is a pension-like program that rewards volunteer firefighters for their years of dedicated service. It provides a modest financial benefit, recognizing the countless hours these men and women spend responding to emergencies, attending training, and keeping our community safe.

Why the Amendment?
The proposed amendment will increase the monthly benefit that volunteers can earn, plus lower the age at which current active members are eligible to start receiving their benefit, bringing it closer to current standards across New York State. The original benefit level was set years ago and has not kept pace with inflation or the rising cost of living. Updating LOSAP ensures that our volunteers are fairly recognized for their commitment and sacrifices.

Why It’s Important for Our Community
Volunteer firefighters save Warwick taxpayers millions of dollars each year by reducing the need for paid fire personnel. Statewide, volunteer fire service saves an estimated $4.7 billion annually. Retaining experienced volunteers is critical—without them, the cost of fire protection would rise dramatically. LOSAP helps ensure Warwick continues to have a strong, skilled team ready to respond when emergencies strike.

What About the Cost?
It is estimated that the increase in the LOSAP contribution will be about $180,000. The Board of Fire Commissioners plans to limit the increase in the annual budget by making other adjustments. If the annual budget was to increase by $180,000, a home with a full market value (not assessed value) of $500,000 would see a $25 increase in the annual fire tax.

Your Voice Matters
On December 9, please come out and vote. By approving this amendment, you are saying “thank you” to the volunteers who protect our homes, businesses, and families every day. Together, we can ensure Warwick remains a community where service is honored and safety is guaranteed.
