Public Safety Alert- Scam Calls

Police and Fire

Sheriff-Photo-2--e1708695452816 Public Safety Alert- Scam Calls  Now trending… the dreaded scam calls.

We are hearing reports of scam callers pretending to be from the Sheriff’s Office, claiming you have an outstanding warrant for missing jury duty. A notice regarding missing jury duty will never be communicated over the phone. These are not the only style of calls they are utilizing. Scammers use many tactics to try to get what they want. Look for the red flags.

Here is a practical checklist to help if you are on the receiving end of a scam call.

  • Urgency or pressure: Scam callers may pressure you to “act now,” saying things like “your account will be closed today,” or “you will be arrested.” Legitimate companies will not bully you.
  • Unexpected calls- Question unexpected calls for prizes won, refunds, missed deliveries, or cash app payments that you never actually sent.
  • Request for sensitive information: Scammers may ask for personal information, passwords, social security numbers, or one-time passcodes.
  • Payment demands: Be cautious if you are asked to make payments via cryptocurrency, wire transfers, Zelle/cash apps, or gift cards.
  • Caller ID lies: Numbers can be spoofed to appear as government agencies, banks, or even your contacts.
  • Refusal to verify- If the caller does not allow you to hang up and call back, something is off.

If a caller instills fear or urgency, assume it is a scam until proven otherwise. As a reminder, if something feels “off,” it is probably a scam. Trust your instincts. If someone contacts you posing as a member of the Sheriff’s Office, hang up and contact our office directly.
