The climate crisis is, fortunately, becoming a major issue. Sustainable Warwick has long advocated for a more effective reduction of fossil fuel use. Two events to press for action are coming up:
Climate Strike on Fri., Sept. 20, a global response that includes marches in NYC and locations in the Hudson Valley. For details and locations visit https://strikewithus.org/. Earth to Cuomo Rally for New York’s Climate on Sun., Oct. 13 from 1 to 3:30 at Waryas Park in Poughkeepsie. For details visit http://ny.mothersoutfront.org/earth2Cuomo.
New York State recently passed the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act, a step in the right direction. However, NYS continues to allow new fossil fuels plants. Despite longstanding, vocal opposition, the CPV fracked gas plant is operating, and now another, larger gas plant is proceeding at Cricket Valley in Dutchess County. Though it may promise a transition off fossil fuels, NYS cannot meet its goals if new plants come online. We now know that the methane released by gas infrastructure make gas plants as harmful to the atmosphere as coal.
Opposition to Cricket Valley is being led by Mothers Out Front, and who better to call for a halt to threats to our children and grandchildren? The Earth to Cuomo Rally intends to send a message: no more fossil fuels plants, no more gas pipelines. If you can, please attend one of these events. If not, contact Gov. Cuomo (518-474-8390) to tell him he needs to put goals into action. We don’t have much time.
