It is hard to believe that the six-week Pine Island Summer Rec Program has come to an end as it was a fun filled time playing on the new playground equipment at the Park. We would once again like to acknowledge the research and planning work that Susan McCosker did with the help of Greg DeBuck on the playground plans that were prepared by Michael Hofknecht of Site Specialists and the generosity of the Kosuga Foundation for the donation of the new playground equipment. There is one more piece of equipment – an onion that will be installed the week of August 26. We would also like to thank Bill Roe and the DPW for all their work on the playground as well as being a phone call away whenever we needed anything.
The summer program consisted of Theme Days consisting of Country Day where the campers were treated with the experience of playing on a tractor from DeBuck’s Sod Farm. We celebrated everyone’s birthday with the help of the Cardenas and Vanadio families. We celebrated Halloween in July and the campers even went Trick or Treating. We had a Treasure Hunt on Pirate’s Day, a Tie -Dye Day, and Crazy Hair Day to name a few. There was a Talent Show consisting of 24 acts including singing and dancing (even some counselors participated), gymnastics, musical instrumentals and magic tricks. Brian the Mad Scientist, did a presentation on fire and ice which was enjoyed immensely. Officer Kearns and Officer Halsey with Nikki the K-9 dog from the Town of Warwick Police Department paid a visit to the Park. Because of schedule conflicts, Ali from the Albert Wisner Public Library was only able to come once for Story Hour and Crafts in the Park.
Our trips this summer were to Elite Cinema 6 to see Toy Story 4, the Town of Ramapo Challenger Center in Suffern, Laser One in Sussex, NJ, Renegades Game at Dutchess Stadium and Turtle Back Zoo in West Orange, NJ. Thank you Gerard for setting up our transportation, and Bob, Tom and Russ from Quality Bus Company for transporting us to and from the trips safely.
Thank you to Jeannie, John and Amanda from CJ’s Country Market, Jorge and his crew from the Harvest, and the Bagel Time staff for always having our lunch orders ready on time for pickup. Ice Cream this year was from Dairy O. Stephanie and Abby scooped the ice cream quickly and were flexible with situations out of our control.
Campers and counselors all enjoyed the summer. Wishing all the campers a great school year!
