Story by Janmarie Foschini
Thomas Gardiner, of Warwick, recently took on an Eagle Scout Project at Holy Rosary Church in Greenwood Lake where he is a parishioner and a past altar server.
Thomas was born in Staten Island, moved to Greenwood Lake in 2004 and to Warwick in 2017. A 2018 graduate of Warwick Valley High School, he joined the G.L. Scout Pack 121 in 2006. Thomas continues to climb the ranks of Scouts and has earned the Arrow of Light, Cub Scouts highest honor.
As a Boy Scout, Thomas was Den Chief, nominated to the Order of the Arrow, and is currently a Life Scout pursuing the Eagle Rank. The next step in the path toward Eagle is the completion of the Eagle Scout Rank Application and an examination by the Eagle Board of Review. If successful, he will join the members of his Desert Eagle Patrol Group, who have earned the rank of Eagle Scout including Dane Sorensen, Chris Sommer and Vincent Carney.
During his high school career Thomas ran cross country, indoor track and outdoor track. Thomas was state champion in a 4×800 meter relay race and has received many team, county and section championships. Thomas was the Section 9 champion in the mile as a senior and qualified for the National Championships during all four years of his high school career.
Thomas has received numerous awards throughout high school, most recently the Most Dedicated Athlete and the Clifford Haight Scholarship for students pursuing a career in education.
Upon seeing the loft of the children’s choir where his sister is a member is the choir, Thomas decided to take on the choir section as his project. The vision was to make the space more child friendly and safer. With the guidance of Scoutmaster Richard Brennan and Assistant Scoutmasters Vincent Carney and Steve Butfilowski, Thomas refinished the existing kneelers and built a new pew kneeler.
Troop 121 members helped him with demolition, cleaning and also learned new skills. This project also held special meaning as it was dedicated to the memory of Walter Andrews, Thomas’ late Scoutmaster.
Thomas who is now a freshman at Xavier University in Cincinnati, OH, is majoring in early education and will be competing for Xavier in the Big East Conference in cross country and track and field.
