You Are Beautiful People, a non-profit 501(c)3 organization founded in 2006 by Peter J. Ladka, has a mission to build bridges between children with disabilities and their families and the broader community of Orange County by providing adaptive sports for children and young adults.
You Are Beautiful People opened the Daniel Fratto Memorial Field in 2018. It is the only baseball field in Orange County specifically designed for adaptive use. Beautiful People athletes started playing on their new field, located at the Wickham Woodlands in Warwick, last spring. Opening day for this year, the first full season, was Sun., May 19. Some 350 people visited throughout the day to celebrate the Walkway and the season opening.
This year, the organization celebrated the unveiling and dedication of their “All Star Walkway,” made up of engraved pavers that represent contributions by families and friends in the community. Fundraising efforts to build the field included the sale of paving bricks. A total of 86 bricks have been donated to date.
The Walkway was designed pro bono by David Crawford, an architect who lives in Goshen and is a member of Beautiful People’s Board of Directors. Many of the bricks contain messages of praise and acknowledgement for Beautiful People athletes from their parents. Others represent corporate donations by generous community members.
Partners in the construction were the engravers, Billings Memorial; the installer, Pete Tomczak, and the paver supplier, Jansen’s Nursery. Paving stones for the walkway can still be ordered by visiting www.beautiful-people.us/donate/.
