The Warwick Valley High School (WVHS) boys’ basketball program will once again host the premier basketball tournament in Orange County. The tournament has been renamed the “Coaches for Charity” Tip-Off Classic. All proceeds will be donated to local community charities in Warwick. There will be a junior varsity and varsity tournament. The junior varsity teams will play their games in the old gymnasium, while the varsity teams will use the new gym. The participants in this year’s tournament include Cornwall, New Paltz, Wallkill and WVHS.
The opening round games will be played on Wed., Dec. 7 with game times of 5 and 6:30 p.m. The consolation and championship games will be played on Fri., Dec. 9. The tournament schedule is as follows:
Junior Varsity Tournament
Wed., Dec. 7: Corwall vs. Warwick at 5 p.m.; Wallkill vs. New Paltz at 6:30 p.m.
Fri., Dec. 9: Consolation Game, time TBA; Championship Game, Time TBA.
Wed., Dec. 7: Wallkill vs. New Paltz at 5 p.m.; Cornwall vs. Warwick at 6:30 p.m.
Fri., Dec. 9: Consolation Game at 5 p.m.; Championship Game at 6:30 p.m.
Playing for Warwick are: Malcolm Bolar, Yu Chen, Gene Decker, Liam Grennan, Zak Goldstein, Josiah Joseph, Devante Nelson, Connor Perez, Austin Ranall, Ryan Tellier, Jaquil Tucker and Rickey Vreeland. The varsity head coach is Tom Folino and the junior varsity head coach is Joe Mackey. Other coaches and assistant coaches include: Anthony Mann, Chris Andre, John Garcia, Madelyn Layng and Nick Nicosia.
During the two-day tournament the Wildcats, along with the tournament participants, have joined together to raise money for local charities in Warwick. In lieu of charging admission into the games, spectators are asked to make a donation to this cause with either a cash or check contribution. All proceeds will go directly to local charities. Make checks payable to “Purple Champions Club.”
